Net Metering

Net metering in Ontario allows homeowners with solar energy systems to generate their own electricity while staying connected to the grid. When your solar system produces more energy than you use, the excess is sent back to the grid, earning you credits that help lower your electricity bills. This program lets you offset the cost of your electricity by using renewable energy, and the Ontario government requires utility providers to offer this option to eligible customers.

Ontario Benefits & Incentives FAQ

Unfortunately, No. Your home must be connected to the Ontario electricity grid and distribution system to be eligible to take advantage of the Home Renovation Savings Program Rebates.

Standalone battery systems rely on the electricity grid for charging, which doesn’t align with the program’s goal of reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and grid demand. To ensure these benefits, battery storage must be installed alongside solar panels.

Yes! You may be able to access both federal loan funding and rebates through this program. Be sure to check the Canada Greener Homes Loan program’s eligibility criteria for full details. More information on the program can be found HERE.

Net metering isn’t allowed under the Ontario Home Renovation Savings program because the program is focused on energy efficiency rather than energy generation. Since net metering allows homeowners to send excess solar power back to the grid rather than directly reducing their own energy use, it doesn’t align with the program’s objectives.

The good news? In most cases, the money saved through this rebate program is greater than what net metering would offer!

To participate in the solar and battery system program, you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The home where the system will be installed must be connected to Ontario’s electricity grid. Please note, Cornwall Electric customers, who are connected to the Hydro-Québec electricity grid, are not eligible.
  • The home must be a single-detached, semi-detached, row, or townhome.
  • You must own the home and be responsible for the purchase and installation of the solar and storage system. If the home has tenants, the property owner must apply.
  • The solar panels must be installed on the rooftop of the home. Portable or temporary structures, including recreational vehicles and trailers, do not qualify.
  • The system must be sized only for load displacement—net metering is not allowed.
  • A battery energy storage system must be paired with the new rooftop solar panel system.
  • All equipment must be new, purchased in Canada, and owned by the program participant.
  • The equipment must meet all relevant standards, including ANSI, CAN, UL, CSA, IEEE, and CEC requirements.
  • You will need to obtain all necessary permits and permissions from your local municipality, distribution company (LDC), and regulatory bodies. This includes completing a Connection Assessment with the LDC and acquiring an Electrical Safety Authority certificate. Contact your local electric utility for detailed information about these requirements.
